Knowledge Lab – annual education workshops for patient organisations

Patient Organisations
Bowel Cancer UK, the Eve Appeal, Myeloma UK and other key stakeholders
Summary
The Knowledge Lab annual workshops, initiated by GSK in partnership with patient organisations such as Myeloma UK, The Eve Appeal, and Bowel Cancer UK, aimed to build meaningful partnerships and enhance the capabilities of oncology focused patient organisations. These four workshops, first launched in 2020, addressed specific knowledge gaps - initially around Health Technology Assessment (HTA) - and evolved to cover broader areas such as disease awareness through diverse media channels. With continuous feedback shaping each iteration, the initiative has led to improved capabilities of patient organisations which ultimately benefited patient communities by raising their knowledge and understanding of these policy areas.

Contracting Process
Fee-for-service agreements were established for speakers from patient organisations, with payments based on fair market value and the individual's level of seniority. A key lesson learned was the importance of timely slide submission for compliance and certification undertaken by GSK.
Going forward, contracts developed by GSK for partnerships will clearly outline expectations regarding referencing and image rights. This will help streamline governance and ensure that deadlines are met in a manageable way.
Implementation
Workshops began with single expert speakers but evolved to feature multiple contributors, enabling peer-to-peer learning. Agendas were co-created, ensuring alignment and eliminating content duplication. Interactive formats - such as facilitated discussions - proved particularly effective. Detailed pre-event surveys allowed speakers to tailor their content to audience needs, significantly boosting engagement and practical value.
Impact
The programme has increased both the knowledge and confidence of over 30 patient organisations that took part in the four workshops, enabling them to support their communities more effectively. Participating groups appreciated the platform to share expertise and strengthen networks. The workshops have reinforced GSK’s credibility as a committed supporter of the patient advocacy space, setting the stage for future cross-sector partnerships. The workshops will now be extended into 2025 and will include other non-oncology organisations that GSK works with.
